Photoshoot - Rachel in Mandarin dress 11

Description

Conception: Rachel: I'm having to hold this pose for a long time...

Method:
XPS: Load base scene with props, apply pose, tinker for effect and to pose dress in preparation for Blender. Save pose.
Blender: Load base file for the scene, remove physics applications, import pose. Adjust imported pose for Blender variations. Readjust vertex group vertices for pinning purposes. Apply physics to body and dress. Adjust camera. Render animation. Choose frame. Render frame as an image.

Commentary:
Hm... a few things of note. I do think I now know how to routinely apply the cloth physics aspect for these pictures which has been a long term goal of mine. In this respect I have to be pleased about this progress I have made. The next thing is to understand better how the engine apply these physics to make things a bit better. Case in point is how the dress interacts with the sofa itself. Ideally the back of the dress lays flat on it, perhaps with some minor wrinkle. I pinned the central part of the dress here and left the sides to have the physics applied. One would think it would drift down but as can be seen it has folded back on itself which is rather strange.

Originally I was going to pose the back of the dress and pin the entirety of it, perhaps sculpt where necessary, and only have the physics apply to the front (as I did previously). But I wanted to experiment a bit. All this has been experimentation really, some results better than others. For those who do check Scraps you'll see what I mean. Overall I'm rather pleased even if it didn't quite turn out in the manner I had aimed for. The texture bleed with the backface texture is an issue which I would need to investigate a way of controlling.

The pose import was also a factor in the pinning. Despite using XPS to keep Rachel on a horizontal plane and posing the back of the dress so it laid flat, the imported pose in Blender had an angle which makes it disappear into the sofa. The expected angle adjustment didn't correct it; neither did the vertical displacement. So it was one of those Blender quibbles I experience which require more tinkering than I had anticipated. At least her expression looks correct. Most problematic was the hair clipping...

Other factors to eventually investigate and understand? Well... the distortion of the edge of the dress. I wonder whether 'weight painting' plays a part in this. Previously tried it as it was a way to apply cloth physics but I couldn't get it to work. More investigation and experimentation is needed on my part.

Rachel: Can I take a rest now?

Whoops.
